The Five Orders
By Kronos
Preface
The Five Orders represent the living zenith of Anuran society, embodying the very essence of strength, honor, wisdom, martial prowess, and divinity. Their lineage unfurls across the vast tapestry of time, reaching back to an era cloaked in enigma, a time when the Anuran civilization teetered on the precipice of oblivion during the tumultuous Age of Cataclysm. Legend speaks of that dire moment, as the very fabric of existence unraveled, when the avatar of Anura herself descended upon the battlefield. With five anointed champions at her side, she drove the enemy into the abyssal depths of the sea. From that fateful day, each hero planted the seeds of their legacy. These seeds grew deep roots that burgeoned over millennia, blossoming into the guardians of today's empire: The Divine, The Devout, The Shadow, The Shapers, and The Fury.
The Orders
The Five Orders represent the living zenith of Anuran society, embodying the very essence of strength, cunning, wisdom, martial prowess, and divinity. These seeds grew deep roots that burgeoned over millennia, blossoming into the core factions of today's empire: The Divine, The Devout, The Shadow, The Shapers, and The Fury.
The Orders stand as embodiments of fundamental principles and virtues that guide and shape its very fabric. Take, for instance, The Divine Order. Above all, it venerates the worship of Anura and serves as the unwavering beacon of faith for the society. Within this order, a complex tapestry of ranks and roles unfurls, each intricately woven to fulfill specific purposes and objectives. At the pinnacle of The Divine stands the High Priestess, chosen by destiny even before her first breath, destined to ascend to her exalted station. Scribes, on the other hand, emerge from the faithful multitude of Anurans who have embarked on a quest for enlightenment.
Just as The Divine Order has its hierarchies, so too do the other orders, each with recruitment systems and ranks meticulously designed to meet their unique objectives. Contrast the Divine High Priestess with the legendary Technomancer of The Shapers. This venerated figure embarks on a lifelong journey from childhood, dedicating decades to studious endeavors. This preparation culminates in the sacred moment when the Technomancer melds with his drone, stepping onto the hallowed path of unity with cybernetics and artficial intelligence, thus achieving digital supremacy and a valued role both on the battlefield as well as in managing the computational infrastructure of the technocracy.
The Divine
In the tapestry of Anuran society, The Divine stand as the ethereal voice and the earthly hand of Anura herself. With both a delicate touch and an omnipotent grasp, they shape the fate of their people, whether by direct influence or by deftly weaving the threads of power from the shadows. Entry into their fold is both a birthright and a divine calling, for a Priestess may be born into her sacred duty or chosen from any stratum of society. The singular criterion for such an exalted selection? The blessing of one of the eleven aspects of the goddess.
While The Divine remain shrouded in mystery, their aura permeates all of Anuran society. Every heart, from the humblest peasant to the grandest Techno Lord, beats with an awareness of their divine blessing. Yet, their name is seldom whispered in casual discourse. For to draw the gaze of a Priestess is to risk baring one's very soul, as they can peer into the essence of a being, discerning character and true intent as if through the clearest pane of glass. Tales of their benevolence — of compassion, healing, and grace — are many. Yet, whispered just as often are tales of retribution, where their arcane power eclipses all else. Thus, the Anuran folk tread with a cautious reverence, often averting their gaze when in the presence of these divine emissaries.
Swathed in robes that cascade to the ground, their countenance hidden by the shadow of heavy hoods, the Priestesses move like enigmas among the people. Whether their garbs, arms, or some arcane artifact are endowed with celestial powers or ancient benedictions remains a matter of speculation. But in their midst, even the strongest Anuran feels a childlike vulnerability and heeds their commands without question.
Each Priestess is intrinsically linked to one of the eleven facets of Anura, symbolized by the orb atop her staff: Blood Lunar Energy Swamp Water Fire Lava Crystal Astral Rejuvenation Ethereal
Endowed with these gifts, there comes a pivotal juncture in a priestess's journey when The Order recognizes her readiness for her predestined path: the esteemed Ceremony of Ascension. This physicallty and spirtually grueling rite not only alters her destiny but also marks a transformative moment in her life. The intricacies of the ceremony remain veiled in mystery beyond the temple's walls. Yet, the staff each ordained priestess wields stands as an indelible testament to her triumphant passage through this trial.
The blessings of the ascended priestess are steeped in an extraordinary potency and can heal even wounds that teeter on the brink of fatality. In the throes of battle, The Blood Witch can, with a mere whisper, thrust Anuran warriors into a whirlwind of unyielding fury, a tempestuous state from which many emerge transformed. Meanwhile, The Theurgist possesses the ethereal ability to breathe life into the magnificent digital effigies crafted by the Shapers.
The Devout
A symbol of strength and nobility, the Anuran Devout stand as the bedrock of the Anuran's military accomplishments and triumphs. They champion values of unwavering faith in and the defense of the technocracy, whether at the vanguard of battle or deep within the psyche of the citizenry. Clad in cybernetic armor and wielding their signature plasma blades, these figures epitomize the very essence of warriors: birthed and nurtured for combat. Throughout Anuran chronicles, The Devout are celebrated not just as soldiers, but as steadfast protectors and leaders of the masses. Its Order Masters have often also served as prominent leaders on the esteemed Golden Council.
From their youth, Devout Knights undergo rigorous training, mastering weaponry, armor, and hand-to-hand combat techniques. When not in combat training the apprentice warrior is deep in study mastering tactics, history and philosophy of renowned Anuran scholars. Their accumulated wisdom, spanning millennia, paints them as both formidable and awe-inspiring adversaries — revered by allies and feared by enemies. Known for both their defensive mastery and willingness to lead assaults, their reputation is as fierce as their loyalty to the Order. Their strategic acumen — an innate understanding of when to defend and when to strike — is complemented by weapons uniquely tailored for them by the revered Guild of Tech Smiths. In times of peace, the Devout Order dedicates its time to service, training and upholding the empire's edicts. But during war, the haunting drone of their crackling plasma often spells doom for adversaries, leaving nothing but blood and ash in its wake.
Biological enhancements not only amplify their physical prowess in battle but also fuel their unyielding commitment to safeguarding their kin. Yet, they are far from mere warriors. Their physical tenacity is paralleled by a mental and spiritual resilience. Hushed stories recount a single knight holding the line against overwhelming forces, paving a path to safety for their comrades, exemplifying both self sarifice and indomitable spirit.
Their heroics, penned in the annals with sacrifice and bravery, have become the legends that young Froglings dream of and every Anuran venerates. Their storied legacy, echoing the fabled first sword’s ultimate sacrifice during the great cataclysm, marked the beginning of the empire's ascent. Due to their formidable spirit and tactical prowess, Devout Commanders often lead special combined-order units as elite leaders, shouldering the realm's most important missions. Their legacy is anchored in the heart of Castellum—a bastion modest yet impenetrable, reflecting the essence of the knights it houses.
From the eager squire to the steadfast Bulwark, and the unconquered Revenant, the ranks and specialties within the Order are diverse. Yet, a singular truth resonates amongst all of The Devout: Anurans rely on them for defense and protection during the darkest of hours. Unwavering in courage and unity, they stand as the bulwark that keeps the foes of Anura at bay.
The Shaper
Only those born with brilliance and masterful intellect may serve as members of the Order of the Tacticians with 1 in 10, 000 acolytes earning the title of Shaper. It is deeply believed in Anuran society that one does not become a Shaper through ascending ranks, or skill, but that they are born with a strategic mind that grows and prospers based on the industry they first fall upon. As such, many who show such a spark at a young age are put into training ‘games’ where they test the limits of their mind and intelligence against complex puzzles and challenges. Should one become successful, they will undergo the proper training, those who are not, are placed into subsequent classes, often becoming scholars, governors, or techno-lords.
In the grand tapestry of Anuran civilization, The Shapers stand as both master architects and builders of the majestic cities, monuments, and temples that dot the empire. They orchestrate and direct vast legions, driving the expansion of the Anuran dominion. Enshrouded in sleek, discreet cybernetic armor and draped in elongated tunics and robes, they present a countenance distinct from warriors, yet with a humility that avoids ostentation. Above all else, The Shaper is an eternal seeker—of truths, of knowledge. As masterminds of science and technology, their genius fuels the very heartbeat of the Technocracy. The Devout's plasma blade, The Fury's power fist, and the iconic HOP-R drop ship are but a few marvels birthed from the crucible of The Shaper's intellect.
Yet, in their brilliance lies an enigma. A distance perceived by their kin, which sometimes breeds mistrust. Many opine that immense intellect begets a detachment from the world's tactile reality. But such notions could not be more astray. Every pulse, every thought of The Shaper is devoted to one cause: the ascent of the empire and the betterment of its populace. Their creations, whether wielded on the battlefield or utilized in advanced medical chambers, are testament to this dedication.
Every Shaper is shadowed by a mechano-whisp, a sentient drone that floats as if defying gravity itself. These marvels, pulsating with artificial intelligence, are joined to a Shaper in their formative years. As the Shaper's wisdom deepens with time, so too does the sentience of the whisp, forging a bond that's singular, unyielding. The intricacies of this Shaper-Whisp communion remain an enigma beyond their order—a secret jealously guarded. But its manifestations are palpable: digital fortresses breached with startling ease, eons of knowledge merged with the Shaper's consciousness, and instantaneous battlefield enhancements. To diminish a Shaper to a mere cerebral entity has proven to be the undoing of countless adversaries.
The Shadow
In the muted echoes of society, The Shadows tread—an invisible force attending to unvoiced necessities and efficient brutality. Members of this Order of Assassins command an unsettling reverence, executing the often morbid whims of the godess. Their prowess lies in the marvels of cloaking technology and an affinity for precision armaments like plasma daggers, and most notably, the Kinetic Pata—a plasmatic blade seamlessly melded to their cybernetic gauntlets. Marrying this deadly array to their innately swift, Shaper-enhanced cybernetics, a Shadow in the dance of blades is a spectacle both breathtaking and lethal.
Crafting this brand of deadly elegance demands a singular Anuran—one often whispered to be a fallen Divine, once bathed in holy light, now shadow-bound, addressing tasks too sordid for luminous hands. While the wider society might deem them impious and rogue, their unwavering allegiance to the Godess and their artistry in their craft render them formidable foes. Their fervor, some say, rivals even The Devout in their zealous commitment to the mission. Hushed voices among the Anuran murmur that if one's eyes meet a Shadow, it's often one's last sight.
Intriguingly, Shadows maintain a clandestine kinship with the Divine. There are murmurs of heretics and obstreperous technocrats who've inexplicably vanished or succumbed to "natural causes" despite their recent vitality. While the Divine venerate Anura through grand sermons and the crafting of sacred effigies, The Shadows believe that the silent and graceful dispatching of the Goddess's adversaries is the truest expression of devotion. A curious parallel, much like the Divines, all Shadows are female, a tradition tracing back to the era of the first five. Their enclave nestles within the marshy terrains of the city of Gaia. Yet, little is truly known about this heartland or its machinations—for like all endeavors of the Shadows, it remains veiled in layers of subterfuge and enigma.
The Fury
In battle, The Fury are unparalleled, their prowess eclipsing all through the force of raw rage and unrestrained ferocity. They wield an arsenal of formidable weaponry, brandishing everything from their signature plasma axes to heavy plasma cannons and siege-busting demolitions. Their very approach to conflict, akin to the untamed tempest, is marked by a ceaseless aggression—always charging, never retreating, even if it demands the ultimate sacrifice.
Born from a fusion of cybernetics and bio-engineering, The Fury stand as titanic war machines, embodiments of devastation. Plucked from their kin as young froglings, distinct from the regular birthing pools, they are biogenetically refined by the sacred keepers. Their enhancements push them beyond the size, endurance, and might of any Anuran, elevating them to a battlefield domain where flesh and steel converge. After enduring years of genetic sculpting, the emerging Fury must weather the pivotal challenge: The Divine Blessing. While the touch of the Divine sends most Anurans spiraling into insanity, often meeting their end in battle or madness, The Fury uniquely harness and channel this divine power.
In seldom instances, it's whispered that some among these berserkers were once ordinary soldiers, who, having endured the Divine’s blessing—or perhaps its curse—ascending to the rank of The Fury. Such metamorphoses, though exceedingly rare, given the complexities of enhancing a fully-grown Anuran, mark these Fury as 'The Chosen.' Deemed paragons by their peers, these warriors have braved the blessing without the customary span of preparation. Nautica, the coastal city, serves as The Fury's stronghold. Here, they stand sentinel, ever vigilant, lest the Leviathan should once again emerge from its watery abyss.
